What Causes Roads and Streets to Settle
The main reason why our streets become uneven and pool water (bird bath) is due to the failure of the expansion joints. As the expansion joint material breaks down it allows water to penetrate below the slab. This causes the soil below the concrete (subgrade) to break down and erode. Heavy traffic can cause the concrete to settle, become uneven, and eventually crack. Expansion joint failure can eventually cause low spots in the streets that hold water, often referred to as bird baths.
